A Brief History of Mason

Mason, Ohio, a thriving city located in southwestern Warren County, has a rich history that spans over two centuries. The area was first settled in the early 1800s by Revolutionary War veterans who were awarded land grants for their service. Among these early settlers was Major William Mason, a veteran from Sussex County, New Jersey, who purchased 640 acres of land in 1803. It was around Major Mason's land that the small settlement began to grow.

Originally named "Palmira" in honor of the ancient city of Palmyra in present-day Syria, the settlement was platted by Major Mason's son, John B. Mason, in 1815. However, in 1832, the town's name was changed to "Mason" to avoid confusion with another Ohio community named Palmyra. The village continued to grow steadily throughout the 19th century, benefiting from its strategic location along the stagecoach route between Cincinnati and Columbus.

Mason was officially incorporated as a village in 1859, and by the turn of the century, it had developed into a bustling community with a variety of businesses, including blacksmith shops, general stores, and taverns.
